Take note that the storyline follows almost completely the original created by Christie (miracle of miracles), no 'improvements' or additional nonsense added except for some scenes early on of Hastings (Hugh Fraser) recovering from shell shock after enduring trench warfare in France. He sees the Roman occupation of ancient Egypt as similar to the British occupation that was occurring during his time. Over the course of his life he wrote more than 60 plays. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, in which capacity he wrote many highly articulate pieces of journalism, his main talent was for drama. Shaw wants to prove that it was not love but politics that drew Cleopatra to Julius Caesar. George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright, socialist, and a co-founder of the London School of Economics. This thesis, therefore, aims at analysing Coleridge’s works in terms of eternal return. One can easily discern many close resemblances between the mariner and these characters and Nietzsche’s well-known Zarathustra. Especially in his tour de force “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” this idea shows itself clearly, with a portrayal of the mariner as a derivative of Cain or the Wandering Jew. His immense reading and philosophical background enabled him to incorporate this idea into his religious personal ideology, stepping short of saying openly what Nietzsche would almost half a century after him. ![]() Despite being a devout Christian, Coleridge mentions eternal return in many of his works, albeit indirectly. Because eternal return demanded a cyclical time which connotes a universe without a beginning or an end, it goes against the teachings of the monotheistic religions. ![]() However, through the advent of monotheistic religions and their spread, this view was abandoned for the linear time belief, which was a means of giving the God omnipotence as the creator and ender of the universe and time. It has been, as made obvious especially by Mircea Eliade’s thorough study, a way for archaic societies and religious people to comprehend and make sense of the world. The myth of the eternal return has been a part of various cultures throughout the World. ![]() 6/7/2023 0 Comments Oogy by Larry Levin![]() ![]() Somehow, he had survived, but only just, with major wounds to his head and most of the left side of his face gone. Oogy’s origins are shrouded in mystery - he probably started life as a drug dealer’s fighting dog who’d refused to fight and had then been used as bait for other dogs. Which would have come as a merciful end to a short and dreadful life. Oogy was probably two months old when Larry first clapped eyes on him, and the puppy’s then-horrendous appearance was the least of his problems - as an appallingly injured stray, he was due to be put down. When he first saw his beloved pet, owner Larry Levin thought Oogy’s face had melted.
