Readers fell in love with the veterinarian James Herriot’s reflections. The decision to publish under a pen name was due in part to Wight still being a practicing veterinarian. It wasn’t until he shifted to a semi-autobiographical tone in his writing that he found his niche. Unfortunately, his first stories on different topics were not successful. While he wanted to write a book for years, it wasn’t until his wife challenged him that Wight – at 50 – finally put pen to paper. He also served in the Royal Air Force and helped raise his family. He was an English veterinarian who drew inspiration from his life when he turned to writing.īefore he became a writer, Wight lived a full life as a veterinarian. Next is "Apt Pupil," the inspiration for the film of the same name about top high school student Todd Bowden and his obsession with the dark and deadly past of an older man in town. This gripping collection begins with "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," in which an unjustly imprisoned convict seeks a strange and startling revenge-the basis for the Best Picture Academy Award-nominee The Shawshank Redemption. "The wondrous readability of his work, as well as the instant sense of communication with his characters, are what make Stephen King the consummate storyteller that he is," hailed the Houston Chronicle about Different Seasons. A "hypnotic" (The New York Times Book Review) collection of four novellas from Stephen King bound together by the changing of seasons, each taking on the theme of a journey with strikingly different tones and characters. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Ben rhodes book after the fallBoth were too enmeshed with big money corporate interests. Most of my early voting life I considered myself an independent and felt I could conceivably vote for a certain type of socially moderate Republican (I say conceivably because I’m not sure I ever actually voted for a Republican, ever.) Most of my twenties, I opted for 3rd Party candidates, feeling that neither major party really represented the way I felt about the world or the policies I wanted to see - the Republicans being too tied up with the Conservative Religious Right and the Democrats just a slightly more socially liberal version of the Republicans. I’ve rather enjoyed many of Rhodes’ podcasts with Crooked Media, Pod Save the World and Pod Save America, so I was familiar with his bio and political history when I began the book. After the Fall: Being American in the World We’ve Made is the second book by Ben Rhodes, the former Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications and Speechwriter for President Barack Obama, and a kind of sequel to the memoir of his time in the White House, The World As It Is. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Louise erdrich the queenShe makes jewel bearings at the plant, a job that barely pays her enough to support her mother and brother. How can the government abandon treaties made in good faith with Native Americans “for as long as the grasses shall grow, and the rivers run”? The bill is a “termination” that threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land and their very identity. It is 1953 and he and the other council members know the bill isn’t about freedom Congress is fed up with Indians. Thomas Wazhashk is the night watchman at the jewel bearing plant, the first factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. Based on the extraordinary life of National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota all the way to Washington, D.C., this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity and unfolds with the elegant prose, sly humor, and depth of feeling of a master craftsman. He advises men on “letting her miss you, but not for too long,” “remembering her birthday,” and “not asking her age.” In the first two books of “The Art of Love”, Ovid addresses his poems to men. The ancient Roman poet Ovid (43 BCE and 17 CE) is well-known among love scholars for his “Ars Amatoria,” a three-volume instructional series of poems describing what love is and how to love using the arts of seduction and intrigue. In 2015, we're still seeing repercussions from 200+ years ago. So the initial fact that this broken and tied-together little family decides to leave Pennsylvania because of racism was a big wake-up call to me, reminding me that, yes, racism existed from the days of slavery and we're STILL seeing the repercussions. Anyway, it seems like racism in American history mostly occupies the space between the 1950s-1960s in my mind, during the civil rights movement and all of that. I have no idea why, it's probably one of those #FirstWorldProblems types of things. And the Italo-Ethiopian War happened basically on the eve of WWII, since the war didn't start until 1939.įor some reason it's bizarre to me that racism existed in 1930s America. Other than that, I couldn't tell you a damn thing. And I'm familiar with the name of Haile Selassie. I'm not familiar with Ethiopia aside from the fact that it's the only African country to have never been colonized. Hitler and Mussolini are both in power in this book, but this involves the Italo-Ethiopian War, which is one thing (of many) I've never heard about. World War II is a period of history where I like to think I'm well-informed on things around the world- from an American standpoint, or the Holocaust, or the Nazis themselves, Hungary, Russia, Japan, wherever. One of the things I loved about this book was the setting, and the fact that it was in a location and time period I was unfamiliar with. 6/10/2023 0 Comments The day you begin storyWhile reading the book, think about how Angelina and Rigoberto are feeling. What feelings on the chart have you experienced?.I keep a class set with my storytime materials. Invite students to revise their feeling choice after they know more about Angelina.Īdditional Note: The feelings chart is a wonderful tool. Upon completion of the story, revisit the front cover and ask students to see if they were right in guessing Angelina’s feeling. Read the book and pause periodically to ask students to find a feeling on the feelings chart that matches how the character feels in the story. Ask students to infer how she may be feeling. Next, use the cover of the book and study Angelina’s face. Invite them to share with a neighbor, then take a few volunteers to share. Begin by asking students to find a feeling on the chart they are feeling that day. with 10-minute intervals between each pairing until Brooks Koepka and. It works best for me to model with students how to hold the feelings chart so it is not a distraction. Golfers will play again in twosomes on Sunday and everyone will start on the first tee. For this primary source pairing, use a feelings chart during storytime. Through beautifully illustrated pages and a cause and effect storytelling style, this book will be a special one to read to remind students of the importance of being kind, welcoming, and open-minded. Other students laugh when Rigoberto, an immigrant from Venezuela, introduces himself but later, he meets Angelina and discovers that he is not the only one who feels like an outsider.
